In 1587 was erected, for the will of the people, a monastery in honour of Cappuccini monks who had helped the people in difficulty. In the Middle Ages San Gimignano was a flourishing town on the Silk Road, but after that, this path was diverted, the town underwent a serious crisis. In the 20th century the complex became a summer residence of the Guicciardini-Strozzi, and in 1988, two Florentines created the Hotel La Collegiata.

Castellare di Castellina was born in the 70s of the union of four estates (Castellare, Caselle, San Niccolò and Le Case) on the initiative of Paolo Panerai. While preserving the traditional methods, the innovation was pursued first of all with the creation of the first experimental vineyard in the Chianti region together with the U of Milan and the U of Florence, implementing the first scientific selection of Sangiovese clones (Sangioveto). Castellare winery was one of the first in Italy to adopt the use of small French oak barrels.

Most famous Tuscan wines are I Sodi di San Niccolo (100% Sangiovese - Vivino 4.4), and Poggio ai Merli (100% Merlot - Vivino 4.2).
The success led to the creation of Rocca di Frassimello winery in Maremma (Tuscany) with wines like Baffonero (Vivino 4.5) and Rapture of the Grape (Vivino 4.3) in collaboration with David LaChapelle.
In Sicily they also own Feudi del Pisciotto winery (also producing wine in collaboration with Brioni) and Gurra di Mare.

Try the wine & food experience with samples of Tuscan cheeses & cold cuts + private visit of the cellars + Grand Crus degustation for a sensorial journey from Tuscany to Sicily (€ 70.00 pp)

Other things to see
...not only the wine
Castelnuovo di Berardenga
A historic settlement area, the Berardenga owes its name to the nobleman of Berardo Frankish lineage, who were alive in the second half of the 10th century and descended from the very Guinigi da Lucca who (867-881), had been Count of Siena. From the second half of the 12th century, Siena began to exercise even tighter control over Berardenga. The Battle of Montaperti between Guelphs and Ghibellines was fought nearby on 4 September 1260, and saw the Florentine army defeated by the Sienese. Charming streets, main square, little shops with wine and cheeses...
Siena
Siena is historically linked to commercial and banking activities, having been a major banking center until the 13th and 14th centuries. Siena is also home to the oldest bank in the world, the Monte dei Paschi bank, which has been operating continuously since 1472. Things to see: Siena Duomo, Piazza del Campo, Palazzo Salimbeni (the original headquarters and still in possession of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena)
San Gimignano
Known as the Town of Fine Towers, San Gimignano is famous for its medieval architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls, form an unforgettable skyline. The "Historic Centre of San Gimignano" is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town also is known for saffron, the Golden Ham, pecorino cheese and its white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, produced from the ancient variety of Vernaccia grape which is grown on the sandstone hillsides of the area.
World’s champion of Gelato with unique flavors:
  • la Crema di Santa Fina® (crema allo Zafferano di San Gimignano DOP and pine nuts)
